Friends In My Garden: Owl

Owl

My friend owl

is a friend of many years.

He perches on the fence

sometimes a little wary

to join in the babble of the crowd

but when he does

they respond with hilarity

to the jokes he tells

for owl is witty as well as wise.

His nest is in a neighbouring tree

close enough to hear my call.

A quiet ear

a word of sense

he brings when I’m in need.

Sometimes there’s a tasty treat

a special prize he’s caught.

Often he’ll stop for a chat

we eat and drink

and soon there’s a bit of a party

as others hear our merriment

and drop in to join the fun

for my friend owl is a clever owl

who knows how to make others happy.

  1. I loved this poem, and the fun times you have with your bird friend. It made me realize that I too have many bird friends that visit me each year, in the same spots at the same time, and after a little food, they bring back their families. I notice you have several friends and flower friends which I will read. You have given me an idea too, so I thank you. I note you are from W.A. and I now live here in Bassendean to be exact. I like the concept of your travel diaries, and will begin with’ Truffle Growing in France’.

    • Dear Carole
Lovely to see your comments on my poems. ‘Friends In My Garden’ was my first book, published in 1995. I wrote the poems for my friends and family, depicting them as things found in a garden, then found that lots of other people related to them and bought the book for their ‘Owl’, ‘Rose’, ‘Butterfly’ and lots more. Selling my first novel,’The Green Velvet Dress’ has taken most of my time in 2015. If you enjoy my writing I think you will enjoy that too, available in most independent bookshops or in eBook.
More of those friendly garden poems to come soon, as well as more travels and short stories. I love to get feedback.
      Many thanks
      Victoria
